Narendra Singh Tomar is a senior political leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A Member of Parliament from the constituency of Morena, Madhya Pradesh, Tomar is also the current Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare in the PM Narendra Modi-led NDA government. Tomar has been with the BJP since the 1980s and has held important posts over the years, both within the party and the state/central governments. He was a member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 1998 to 2008. After a brief stint in the Rajya Sabha, Tomar has been a member of the Lok Sabha since 2009. He has held various ministries in successive NDA central governments since 2014. Notably, the three new much-debated farm laws passed by the Centre in 2020, namely Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; Farmers (Empowerment and Protection Agreement) on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020, were enacted under Tomar’s ministership.
